Anyone dealing with China and Japan these days has heard something about the Nanjing Massacre or Rape of Nanking called “Datusha” in Chinese and remembered for its horror 70 years later. I saw the film “Nanking” at Portland’s Hollywood Theatre that hosted the International Documentary Association’s “Docuweek” in October and I and was impressed with the production and performances by Jurgen Prochnow as John Rabe, Woody Harrelson as Bob Wilson, Mariel Hemingway as Minnie Vautrin, Rosalind Chao as Chang Yu Zheng, and the other actors who performed dramatic readings set to documentary footage from historical archives. See http://nankingthefilm.com/ and http://www.filmaction.org/engaging/about_theatre.html for information about the theatre that Film Action Oregon calls home.
The film opened in theaters across the country on December 12 2007 as Chinese gathered at remembrance ceremonies at Nanjing, Beijing and other Chinese cities for the 70th Anniversary of the tragedy. CCTV covered the story and you can see it at http://www.cctv.com/video/NewsHour/2007/12/NewsHour_300_20071213_7.shtml
