“The Lady Washington at Kushimoto, Japan in 1791”

The Early Republic and the Sea

My essay, “The Lady Washington at Kushimoto, Japan in 1791” was included in the anthology , “The Early Republic and the Sea: Essays On The Naval And Maritime History Of The Early United States” published in 2001 (Brassey’s Inc.). It was a pleasure to work with Editors William S. Dudley and Michael J. Crawford and it would be great to work with them again. I was delighted to see that the text they selected for the front cover flap included “Elizabeth Nuxoll’s prize winning essay, “The Naval Movement of the Confederation Era”, and Jim Mockford’s “The Lady Washington at Kushimoto, Japan, in 1791” noting, “Mockford takes the perspective, unusual for the historical period treated, that is provided from Japanese sources.”
