We have been very lucky to visit Hawaii a number of times over the years and twice in 2013. In February I presented a paper at the Maritime Archeology and History of Hawaiian Islands (MAHHI) Symposium that is sponsored by the University of Hawaiʻi at Mānoa Marine Options Program, NOAA Office of National Marine Sanctuaries, and MAHHI Foundation. It was my third time to participate as a speaker at this program and a great time to meet professionals this interesting field. In October-November we visited the Big Island of Hawaii to see the Kona Coffee Festival, join relatives for a birthday and take in local sites around Kealakekua, Captain Cook, Holualoa and Kona-Kailua before heading to Kauai for a week. This blog will show some of the 2013 highlights before selecting a few stories further in the past.
In 2005 while on a “vacation” as a cruise ship lecturer I sailed across the South Pacific from Valparaiso, Chile to Robinson Crusoe Island, Easter Island, Pitcairn Island, Bora Bora and Tahiti. I did not start a WordPress Blog until after that trip but I uploaded a summary to another blog site and later moved some of the content to this WordPress blog.
